Habitat for Humanity
"Women Build" Hands-On Project
Members of Soroptimist International of Oceanside-Carlsbad
took a Saturday in September, 2008, to help build an 11-unit condo project
in Carlsbad for Habitat for Humanity.
SIO-C members, many of whom were new to building
skills, cut and bent rebar and worked on other aspects of completing the
foundations of the two buildings. At the end of the day, they were sore
and tired, but feeling very accomplished and rewarded.
Members worked alongside one of the women who
will buy one of the completed condos. Rachel
is a single mother with two young boys, and she will put in a considerable
amount of work to build her home. The expected completion date is summer
of 2009.
SIOC sponsored Habitat For Humanity on this
build for $5,000. With this sponsorship the club received four tickets
to Habitat's annual Hats Off Luncheon, including an ad in the program,
which is a major fundraiser for Women's Build. Also with our sponsorship
we were able to hang our banner at the jobsite, which has been there since
about April of 2008. We also had our logo on the Habitat For Humanity
Women Build banner and on the back of the pink T-Shirts.
Any member is eligible to come anytime to
the jobsite and work on the project. Some who worked on the official Women's
Build day said they would like to come back and work.
